The name Tapovan has been derived from two Sanskrit words ‘tapas’ meaning pain or suffering and ‘vana’ meaning forest. This literally suggests a forest of spiritual practice. Traditionally in India, the places where the sages and hermits used to meditate and seek spiritual bliss came to be known as Tapovan.

Tapovan is idyllically situated on Dehradun-Raipur road and is located about 14 km from ISBT, Dehradun. This picturesque place is about 46 km from Rishikesh, 55 km from Haridwar and around 250 km from Delhi. Dehradun railway station is the nearest railhead at 7 km Tapovan. Jolly Grant airport at 30 km away is the closest airport. You can book a cab or travel by taxi till Tapovan as there are a number of transport facilities availability till Tapovan.
