The Forest Research Institute (FRI) is a highly revered institute of Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education. It is a primary institution in the field of forestry research in India. Located at Dehradun, FRI was declared as a deemed university in 1991 by the University Grants Commission. The FRI campus hosts the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), the staff college that imparts training to the officers selected for the Indian Forest Service (IFS).
The institute boasts of its well-equipped laboratories, library, herbarium, arboreta, printing press and experimental field areas for conducting forestry research, probably the best in the world. Most of the forest officers are a part of this institute and one can see the Botanical Museum located here
History
Forest Research Institute was founded in 1878 as the British Imperial Forest School by Dietrich Brandis. In 1906 it was re-establish as the Imperial Forest Research Institute, under the British Imperial Forestry Service. Later in 1938, the Forest Research Institute was established as an Indian Forest College and officers recruited to the Superior Forest Service by the states and provinces were trained here.
Architecture of Forest Research Institute
The Forest Research Institute showcases a remarkable Greeko Roman Architecture styled by C.G. Blomfield. The main building of this institute is a National Heritage that was inaugurated in 1929. The Forest Research Institute sprawls over 450 hectares and is spread over a lush green estate, opening to a gorgeous view of the verdant hills. The main building of FRI exhibits the Greco-Roman and Colonial style of architecture, having a plinth area of 2.5 hectares.
